Lake Geneva Region at MIPIM international real estate expo breaks new ground

Each year, Geneva participates in the world’s most important international real estate exhibition and conference event in Cannes in the South of France. With over 200 cities/regions represented and participation by 1,000 investors and 950 developers, MIPIM is the largest annual rendezvous for international real estate professionals in the world.
In 2002, Geneva is again present in the Swiss Pavilion, located in the centre of the main congress hall (Riviera Area R33.02) and regrouping exhibitors from some of the most attractive investment locations in Switzerland. Geneva again occupies the largest stand area.
What particularly sets Geneva’s presence apart at MIPIM 2002 is the official recognition of her key role as economic dynamo for an important Franco-Swiss region. For the first time, partners from neighbouring French counties in the central-eastern part of France (Rhône-Alpes) as well as Nyon in the Swiss Canton of Vaud are present in the Geneva section of the Swiss Pavilion.
Lake Geneva Region
The renewed spirit of cross-border collaboration is reflected in the development of a brand image based on the Lake Geneva Region and is supported by a new logo that symbolises the pivotal role of Geneva in this key Franco-Swiss region. Apart from Geneva’s high global profile, her economic influence is considerable in a region stretching from France’s second city, Lyons 100 miles away, and throughout Switzerland.
MIPIM again confirms the attractiveness of Lake Geneva Region to international real estate investors as well as companies and organisations looking for business locations in Europe that satisfy the increasingly stringent operating requirements imposed by a global economy.
MIPIM allows direct comparison of investment opportunities and business locations around Europe and gives Lake Geneva Region the opportunity to demonstrate its exceptional advantages. Investing in Lake Geneva Region has never been more attractive
The Lake Geneva Region presence at MIPIM is co-ordinated by Geneva's Department of Economy, Employment and External Affairs (DEEE) together with the Department of Urban and Land Planning, Infrastructure and Housing (DAEL), strongly supported by both public and private sector partners in Switzerland and neighbouring France.
To EU, or not to EU
As Switzerland is not a member of the European Union whilst France is, Geneva and her close French neighbours have been quick to build on the advantages to real estate investors and business managers of effectively having a foot both in the EU and outside the EU. There is an increasing trend for companies to locate parts of their operations in Geneva and part in neighbouring France to benefit optimally from the unique situation of Geneva.
Apart from the official Economic Promotion agencies on both sides of the border, there are also a number of private companies that can advise international investors and business managers on the respective advantages of being physically present in Geneva or in one of the contiguous areas in Switzerland or France.
Regional initiatives
The degree of collaboration in the Geneva region has always been strong. There is, today, a new-found determination to promote the Lake Geneva Region internationally as one of the most dynamic areas in the Continent. A shared language, history and heritage supported by a new political will, guarantees an even brighter economic future for the whole region.
The new entity, Lake Geneva Region, offers EU and non-EU advantages plus a series of cross-border real estate initiatives that currently make the region one of the most exciting in Europe. Indicative of this new-found dynamism is the presentation of ambitious public/private sector regional projects including:
o A new Lake Geneva right bank – left bank international railway line from Geneva’s central station to French town Annemasse and linking three key Swiss investment zones. The project is being co-financed by the Swiss railways, the Swiss federal government, the State of Geneva and private investors. It is expected to stimulate investment in an important corridor of considerable potential that has long been the target for such development.
o The ‘Golden Rectangle’, centred on Geneva International Airport, is described as the most ambitious European cross-border construction project since CERN (the pan-European particle physics laboratory) and will add a whole new dimension to Geneva’s already impressive global status. Building on the advanced existing development on the Geneva side of the airport, neighbouring France plans to convert essentially rural tracts into planned development.
o The exciting growth of the Archamps Parks complex just south of Geneva in nearby France and incorporating university, business and industrial parks is the result of close Franco-Swiss co-operation that began over a decade ago. The success of Archamps has led to a new French initiative this year under the newly-coined catchy ‘Euro-Swiss territory’ that is intended to lead to general high-tech growth throughout the area benefiting from Geneva’s world-class infrastructure but in the EU. Currently, Archamps is home to some 150 companies, organisations and academic institutions.
o A major face-lift to one of the first Technoparcs to be established in the region 20 years ago in the Pays-de-Gex county is being undertaken to attract more leading companies to the park lying just opposite the huge CERN site to the west of Geneva and home, for example, to the Franco-Italian semi-conductor giant ST among others. The Pays-de-Gex has long been a preferred home for many of the international staff working in Geneva but has recently begun to establish itself as a host in its own right to international organisations and multinational companies.
Private sector projects
The two private company exhibitors in the Geneva section of the Swiss Pavilion are:
o Samuel Creations, a leading Geneva-born architectural consultancy, is responsible for establishing the first five-star hotel chain in Switzerland. The approach is innovative and striking in its originality. Currently six hotels in leading Swiss locations form the chain with each exhibiting a distinctive character all its own. The company takes care of both external and internal architectural development leading to a particularly effective harmonious effect.
o Jelmoli, a leading Swiss promoter, is displaying three key projects including one, the Technology Innovation Centre that will put Geneva in the lead in Switzerland. The new Centre will have 50 000 m2 (538 000 ft2) and is composed of four five story buildings. The new complex confirms Geneva’s unceasing need for more office and laboratory space to house the companies and organisations from around the world that want to take advantage of the unique situation of Geneva and its region. When completed, the TIC will be the largest high technology centre in Switzerland.
